Morning Pages: Writing Your Way to Clarity

The practice of Lekhan — unfiltered morning writing

Julia Cameron introduced Morning Pages in "The Artist's Way" in 1992, but the practice of early-morning writing goes back centuries. Monks, philosophers, and mystics have long known: something powerful happens when you write before the inner critic wakes up.

What Are Morning Pages?

Three pages of longhand, stream-of-consciousness writing done first thing in the morning. No topic. No structure. No editing. No audience. Just write.

In Brahma, we call this practice Lekhan (लेखन) — simply "writing." The rules are the same: no filter, no judgment.

Why They Work

1. Cognitive dumping. Your mind carries unprocessed thoughts, worries, plans, and fragments from yesterday and from dreams. Morning Pages externalize this mental load. Once it's on paper, your brain can stop holding it.

2. Bypassing the inner critic. In the early morning, the prefrontal cortex (your analytical, judgmental brain) is not yet fully engaged. Writing in this state accesses deeper, more authentic thoughts.

3. Pattern recognition. After weeks of Morning Pages, patterns emerge. You notice what you keep writing about — the relationship you're avoiding, the project you secretly want to start, the boundary you need to set. The pages become a mirror.

4. Creative priming. Research at the University of Rochester found that expressive writing for 15 minutes increased creative problem-solving ability for hours afterward. By dumping the mundane, you clear space for the creative.

How to Practice in Brahma

  1. After your stillness and breathing practices, open the Brahma app's notepad for Morning Pages.
  2. Set the timer for 10–15 minutes (or write freely).
  3. Write whatever comes. "I don't know what to write" is a perfectly valid sentence to start with. Keep the pen moving.
  4. Don't read what you wrote — at least not right away. The value is in the writing, not the reading.
  5. No digital devices. If possible, use a physical notebook. The hand-brain connection in longhand writing is neurologically different from typing.

Common Resistance

"I'm not a writer." Morning Pages are not writing — they are thinking on paper. You're not creating literature. You're emptying your mind.

"I don't have time." Even 5 minutes of Lekhan has value. Brahma's default is 10 minutes, but adjust to what works.

"Nothing comes." Start with what's true: "I'm sitting here and nothing is coming. My back hurts. I'm thinking about that email from yesterday..." Something always comes. Always.

The Long Game

Morning Pages practitioners consistently report that after 30–60 days, clarity increases dramatically. Decisions become easier. Creative ideas flow more freely. Anxiety decreases. Not because writing is magic — but because you've built a daily practice of honest self-communication. And a person who communicates honestly with themselves makes better choices about everything.
