Oil Pulling: Benefits and How-To
The ancient oral health practice explained
5 min readBrahma Team
Oil pulling (Gandusha or Kavala Graha) is a traditional Ayurvedic practice of swishing oil in the mouth to improve oral and systemic health.
How to Practice
- First thing in the morning, before eating or drinking
- Take 1 tablespoon of organic, cold-pressed sesame or coconut oil
- Swish gently for 15–20 minutes (start with 5 minutes and build up)
- Do NOT swallow — the oil collects bacteria and toxins
- Spit into a trash can (not the sink — oil can clog pipes)
- Rinse with warm water, then brush teeth normally
Benefits
Research-backed:
- Reduces harmful bacteria (Streptococcus mutans) in the mouth
- Decreases plaque and gingivitis
- May improve bad breath (halitosis)
Traditional Ayurvedic claims:

- Detoxifies the body through the oral mucosa
Tips for Success
- Use the Brahma app timer set to 15 minutes

- If 15 minutes feels too long, start with 5 and gradually increase
